West Covina Unified Middle School International Baccalaureate Program Inspires Global Learners

WEST COVINA, CA – West Covina Unified is furthering its efforts to provide excellence in education and citizenship through the addition of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), housed at both Edgewood Middle and High Schools.

Edgewood became an IB-authorized school for MYP – which serves students ages 11 to 16 – in December 2018 after establishing its candidacy in fall 2015. The program builds on the skills developed in the Primary Years Programme at Orangewood Elementary and prepares students for the rigor of Edgewood High School IB Diploma Programme.

“MYP challenges students to become avid researchers and to understand local and global contexts of their studies in all subjects,” Edgewood IB Schools Principal Roni Maddox said. “Students also receive foreign-language instruction along with both a visual and performing arts education, often not seen together at a middle-school level, offered to each and every student beginning at the 6th grade.”

MYP provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers while fostering intercultural understanding and global engagement.

The five-year program – which begins in sixth grade and extends to 10th grade at Edgewood High School – covers eight subjects: arts, design, individuals and societies, language acquisition, language and literature, mathematics, physical and health education, and sciences.

West Covina Unified – a state-certified district of choice – aims to prepare students for success in college and career on a global scale.

Nearly all of West Covina Unified’s 2018 IB Diploma candidates received the Diploma, which can lead to advanced standing, course credit, scholarships and other admissions benefits at many colleges and universities.

Enrollment for the 2019-20 year is now open for West Covina Unified’s IB schools. To begin the enrollment process, visit the District enrollment page.
