West Covina Unified’s new sports complex was filled with the sound of running water and cheers on May 11, as West Covina Unified Board of Education members and administrators gathered to fill the Olympic-size pool and celebrate the project’s construction progress.
West Covina Unified Board of Education members and Superintendent Dr. Charles D. Hinman begin the pool-filling process at Edgewood High School’s new sports complex on May 11. The complex is expected to be completed by July 1.
Wielding a hose, Board of Education members kicked off the process of filling the CIF Southern Section sanctioned-sized swimming pool, which will be the centerpiece of the state-of-the-art complex, housed at Edgewood High School. The $18 million project, funded by the voter-approved Measure ES, is expected to be completed by July 1.
“We are committed to providing students with the best possible facilities and unparalleled resources, a mission made possible by the support from our community and Board of Education,” WCUSD Superintendent Charles D. Hinman said. “We are excited to see this project approach the finish line and look forward to seeing our students enjoy these new facilities.”
Built by Myrtha Pools, the pool measures 50 meters by 25 meters, features a movable bulkhead that will allow multiple games and competitions to occur simultaneously, thermal shade structures that will reduce pool heating costs and bleachers that can accommodate 350 people.
The complex will include four locker rooms – two each for Edgewood High School and West Covina High School, two digital scoreboards capable of video playback, and a high-quality sound system.
The complex, which will serve both Edgewood and West Covina high schools’ athletic teams, is the latest project in the District’s ongoing efforts to provide safe and high-quality learning environments that support student success.
